Mosel Elite
2012 Weiser-Künstler:
Ellergrub Kabinett & Spätlese
"These are consistently among the top wines produced anywhere in the Mosel" -Mosel Fine Wine Review
Beginning with the quote above feels mandatory. It cuts to the chase, plain and simple.
Since its founding in 2005, the Weiser-Künstler estate has soared to the absolute top of the Mosel. We've watched this ascent closely. Their '11s were just stunning - easily one of the top collections of the vintage. And their '12s are even better. Weiser-Künstler's '12 Steffensberg Spätlese Trocken was my wine of the year.
These are great wines, but it's impossible not to also focus on the value. Finding elite Kabinett and Spätlese at these prices has become very difficult.
Both of these are some of the absolute greatest examples of their prädikats from the 2012 vintage. The Kabinett shows a beautiful aromatic complexity and laser focus. David Rayer and Jean Fish of Mosel Fine Wine Review nail the Spätlese when they write, "This is a stunner in the making and, already now, a hot contender for Spätlese of the vintage."
Ellergrub is the heart of Weiser-Künstler's impressive old vine holdings in great vineyards. Many German fanatics would rate the under-the-radar Ellergrub as one of the best in the Middle Mosel. Weiser-Künstler's parcel in this steeply terraced, mostly blue slate, vineyard is home to hundred year old ungrafted vines.
Both the Kabinett and Spätlese are delicate, pristine, shimmering Rieslings. Their fine-ness, their kaleidoscopic complexity, their tension is really stunning.
These are wines that are really easy to go on and on about. They are also in short supply - Weiser-Künstler only has 3ha total. And word is out about the quality here. This is all to say that both of these are limited.
