"Mountain wines" is a loose, possibly cavalier term we use for high-voltage, high-tension wines that we love.

Like the vertical, thin-air landscapes from which they come, mountain wines are often more flower than fruit, more mineral than earth. Where the flatlanders have girth and size, mountain wines are nimble, tense.

Come see what we're talking about on Thursday, January 23rd between 5:30 & 7:30pm.

We'll be pouring two wines from Valle d'Aosta and three from Savoie, regions that are basically on the French and Italian side of Mt. Blanc.

To start with sparkling, there's Belluard's Ayse Brut from the rare indigenous Gringet grape. This is hands down one of our favorite value sparklers. There's also Pavese, a brightly mineral Morgex, and Masson's Apremont, a wine that boast's a firm rocky verve and mountain stream purity.

Moving to Valtellina in the mountains north of Milan, there's 2006 Ar. Pe. Pe.'s Sasella Stella Retica. Valtellina's vineyards are 1,200-1,800 feet above sea level. Here Nebbiolo is lighter, more nervous, revealing its more delicate and finessed side. It's simply a captivating, heartbreaking expression of the grape.

Please see below for a full list of the line-up, but before closing we have to mention the 2011 Ilarria Irouleguy. In many ways, this is the "odd man out" coming from much further south in French Basque country. Illaria's Irouleguy boasts much more power and tannic grip yet offers a very long, detailed and energetic finish that highlights its mountain origins. It just begs for a piece of duck confit.

Across the board, these are wines that we drink again and again. They're so refreshing and so intriguing that they often feel impossible to tire of.

This event is FREE, but you do have to RSVP - email us at events@crushwineco.com and let us know how many people will be in your party. See you Thursday!
