Muscadet Revolution:
2023 Bretaudeau Muscadet de Sevre-et-Maine Theia

Posted by Ian McFadden

Jérome Bretaudeau is simply one of the most dynamic forces in Muscadet.

The first time I tasted his 2023 Muscadet Theia I immediately bought a large amount and told myself I'd figure out the rest later.

The wine was that compelling. It's no surprise that you'll find Bretaudeau's wines in Paris' best restaurants.

Recently, I had the opportunity to revisit some of the Muscadets that were formative during my early days at Crush, 2002 and 2004 Luneau-Papin L d'Or. They drove home just how serious Muscadet can be.

Bretaudeau's Theia was a revelation and immediately joined producers like Pepiere, and Luneau-Papin as a go-to Muscadet.

The cellar at Bretaudeau is famous for containing all sorts of vessels and many varietals, including Chardonnay aged in solera and Savagnin. The Theia is one of the less experimental of Bretaudeau's wines. It's from gabbro, a volcanic rock that produces some of the best and most structured Muscadets around and is aged in a mix of foudres and concrete vats.

The 2023 offers up a beautiful combination of depth, focus, and snappy minerality. I like how it manages to be so finely etched while having resonate depth. All of this with zingy currents of citrus and you have a lovely bottle of Muscadet.

I'll certainly be drinking this wine through the warm months ahead. This is simply lovely and shouldn't be missed.
