2011 Mugneret-Gibourg:
Bourgogne Rouge, Nuits St. Georges, Vosne-Romanée,
NSG 1er Cru Vignes Rondes, 1er Cru Chaignots, Clos Vougeot

Mugneret-Gibourg is one of the great successes of 2011.

Their 2011s were easily among the most memorable wines of my Burgundy trip last year. It's for that reason that I've worked very hard to amass a serious collection of their 2011s.

Since the 2005 vintage, Mugneret-Gibourg's wines have simply reached a new, unprecedented level of elegance, clarity and regal, perfumed harmony.

This hasn't escaped notice among serious collectors. Spend some time in their cellars and along with the most elite producers (Roumier, Rousseau, DRC, etc) you will often find a corner stocked with Mugneret-Gibourg. This has made their wines harder and harder to come by.

I'm very proud of the collection that I've been able to amass. It's taken many months to get these modest quantities together. The list ranges from Mugneret-Gibourg's ultra-rare Clos Vougeot, a benchmark for this Grand Cru, to the equally rare Bourgogne Rouge, again another benchmark.

There's the Nuits 1er Cru Chaignots, a wine that we consider a pillar of Mugneret-Gibourg at Crush and just stunning in 2011. There are also two very rare Nuits. The Nuits Villages is sourced from a lieu-dit Au Bas de Combe that borders Vosne and produces a more gentle version of Nuits. Burghound calls it "a terrific villages." And there's the Vignes Rondes, an impressive bottle that's almost never seen this side of the Atlantic.

What makes Mugneret-Gibourg's 2011s so compelling is how they combine a seductive texture with an ultra-fine and elegant precision. Top-to-bottom the range harnesses the vintage's finesse. The velvety mouthfeel is complemented by soil notes, spice and high-toned floral notes. It's clear that they really "got" the vintage.

It's getting incredibly hard to offer a range like this from Mugneret-Gibourg. I really don't know when the next time I'll be able to offer a line-up like this. This is something to jump on.

2011 Mugneret-Gibourg

Bourgogne Rouge

Burghound: "A very spicy nose of ripe plum and cassis leads to very rich and round middle weight flavors that possess a lovely mouth feel as there is good concentration as well as solid phenolic maturity to the relatively fine grained tannins. There is fine balance and length and this offers excellent quality for the appellation. Recommended."

Vosne-Romanée

Burghound: "Here the expressive nose is a bit more elegant with essence of plum and violet aromas that are trimmed in notes of anise, menthol and sandalwood. There is a silky texture to the utterly delicious and seductively proportioned medium-bodied flavors that are not especially concentrated but they are harmonious, beautifully complex and impeccably well-balanced."

Nuits St. Georges

Burghound: "A mild application of wood sets off the naturally spicy and distinctly earthy black pinot fruit and cassis suffused nose. There is exceptionally good richness to the round and velvety flavors that possess a gorgeous mouth feel on the mouth coating and extract rich finish. As it sometimes does, this is really more Vosne than Nuits in 2011. A terrific villages."

Nuits St. George 1er Cru Les Vignes Rondes

Burghound: "A background touch of oak frames the perfumed, spicy and delicately earthy aromas of more deeply pitched red currant and black cherry. There is a wonderfully velvety texture to the strikingly pure medium-bodied flavors that brim with structure-buffering dry extract that really coats the palate on the admirably persistent finish. I really like both the sense of underlying tension as well as the delivery as this is very stylish. Lovely."

Nuits St. George 1er Cru Les Chaignots

Burghound: "A discreet application of wood allows the ripe aromas of cassis, earth and black cherry to be appreciated. The suave, round and opulent flavors possess a very supple and accessible mid-palate before culminating in a mouth coating and lingering finish that evidences just a hint of rusticity. Excellent."

Clos de Vougeots

Burghound: "A ripe yet discreet and restrained cool red berry fruit nose also displays notes of warm earth, spice, plum and floral hints. There is excellent richness and overt power to the relatively refined medium weight plus flavors thanks to the fine grained tannins that coat the mouth on the explosively long finish. This impeccably well-balanced effort is clearly the best in show in 2011 as well as the most obviously structured."
