Nothing Short of Magical:
2008 Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

Posted by Joe Salamone

Pepe's wines are some of the most strikingly original and beautiful wines that you'll ever encounter.

Catching a bottle of Pepe when it's on is to experience something that can't be replicated in the world of wine. The Montepulciano is world-class.

Along with Valentini, Pepe's work with Montepulciano is nothing short of magical. Pepe turns Montepulciano, a cheap mainstay of red sauce joints, into something that commands a place on the world stage.

Pepe's wines are legendary for how they age. Bottles from the 60s and 70s are still great today. They age on their density, balance and energy. We created the pack pricing for this reason.

We tasted Pepe's 2008 Montepulciano this summer and were really impressed. Now that the chilly months have settled in, we wanted to revisit the wines.

The 2008 is classic Pepe, showing the haunting nuance and multidimensional personality that makes Pepe so compelling. It covers a headspinning range, from notes of leather, herbs and flowers to sunbaked grass and animal notes. What's most striking is that all of this is delivered with brilliant clarity.

Pepe's are some of the most coddled bottles on the planet. The grapes are hand-picked, hand-destemmed, and then crushed by foot. After a carefully watched fermentation and élevage, each and every bottle is filled by hand.

I encourage you to check out Levi Dalton's I'll Drink to That interview with Chiara De Iulis Pepe. It's a fascinating overview of the estate.

Pepe's wines are some of the most soulful and individual around. Antonio Galloni sums up Pepe really well when he writes, "Bucking every trend and modern convention, the wines of Emidio Pepe represent one of the most singular expressions in winemaking today." It's always a pleasure to offer Pepe.
