"Nuanced and Classy"
2004 Roederer Cristal

"The 2004 Cristal is nuanced and classy right out of the gate."

Bottles of Cristal have blown me away too many times to count. That happened recently with a bottle of 2004 that we opened at the store. It was an amazing champagne.

It's easy to imagine that Cristal's status as a luxury item obscures just how great it can be. It also obscures Roederer's progressive philosophy, which is often overlooked. Roederer is the largest organic and biodynamic vineyard owner in Champagne.

Every element of producing great Champagne is approached at Roederer with the utmost care and thoughtfulness. This attention to detail shows.

The 2004 Cristal is one of the absolute highlights of the vintage. The combination of sleek elegance and layered, multifaceted complexity is magical. We recently opened a bottle at the store after some serious wine, including Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne and Gonon VV, and the 2004 totally held its own.

This is an especially refined vintage that's showing beautifully today. I'm very happy to offer.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2004 Cristal is nuanced and classy right out of the gate. Hints of lemon confit, marzipan, tangerine oil, spice and chamomile are all suggestive of a Champagne that has arrived at its first inflection point of early maturity. The interplay of slightly more mature notes with a good deal of freshness makes for an incredibly delicious wine to enjoy now. As it turns out, I tasted the 2004 again the following day and found it even more vibrant than the bottles we served at this lunch. This remains one of my favorite vintages here. Two thousand and four was the highest-yielding vintage in Champagne at the time, yet the best wines have always been compelling."
