"Valentini is one of Italy’s most iconic producers" - Antonio Galloni
2006 Valentini Montepulciano d'Abruzzo
Most Montepulciano is nondescript bulk wine. In Valentini's hands, Montepulciano becomes one of Italy's best - and most elusive - wines.
Along with Emidio Pepe, Valentini has the magic touch with the grape.
Valentini's Montepulciano is painfully rare. It's a wine that he doesn't release every vintage, and when he does it's always in very limited quantities. The last vintage of Montepulciano was 2002.
Before continuing, I should underscore that we only have a very limited amount and we expect it to sell out quickly.
Valentini's Montepulciano is soaring, vivid and wildly complex. Compared with Pepe, Valentini is more powerful, denser and has more grip. For all of its muscle and intensity, it's also strikingly pure and delineated. All of this adds up to it aging amazingly well.
Few wines manage to cover such a spectrum of flavor. There's dark fruits, smoke, baked herbs, pine resin, exotic spicing and high-toned floral notes. It delivers these with an extraordinary sense of polish and sophistication.
Whenever we taste Valentini's Montepulciano, we're in awe of the wine. It's that captivating. I wish we could offer it more often and in greater quantity, but for now I'm just happy to have any to offer.
