Mascarello's Monprivato is a special wine.
It's one of the great expressions of Barolo. Very few achieve the Burgundy-like finesse that Mauro, somehow, coaxes from this hallowed site. The same goes for the depth and perfume that the wines achieve.
The 2009 Monprivato is one of our favorite wines of the vintage. Antonio Galloni really nails it when he writes, "impresses for its sheer balance."
2009 is a riper vintage and it's very likely that no one judged the vintage with the astuteness that Mascarello did. The finesse and overall harmony that his Monprivato shows is shocking.
Monprivato can be tough to read in its youth, but the 2009 boasts a flamboyance that clearly announces itself as classic Mascarello. There's a healthy dose of dark fruits and pulverized flowers (roses, violets, etc.) mingled with spices.
Year after year, Monprivato is one of our favorite Piedmont wines. This speaks volumes to just how consistent it is.
There are really few wines that are as dear to our hearts as this one. And that speaks as much to its outright quality as it does to the unique expression of Barolo that it delivers.
