2011 Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Cuvée Réservée

"One of the stars of the vintage" -Robert Parker

Pegau has been on a "can't miss" run for years. A long-time benchmark of Châteauneuf, Pégau has seemed to go from strength-to-strength with each vintage for the past twenty years.

And their 2011 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Réservée drives this home. In short, it's an absolutely stunning accomplishment.

Parker writes that Pégau is: "One of the bastions of traditionalism in Châteauneuf du Pape... This nearly 50-acre estate fashions some of the longest-lived, most interesting wines of the appellation."

In 2011, Pegau really over-delivered. It's a very good vintage, but Pegau takes it to a new level. The '11 Réservée boasts gorgeous aromatics of spice, garrigue, smoke and hints of meatiness. Add to this, beautifully layered red fruits.

Pegau's Châteauneufs are benchmarks of the region, consistently among our favorites. They age superbly and if the 2011s are seductive right now (and they are), they will age easily for the next decade and more. It's shocking how on the top of their game Pegau is. Theirs is a very, very high level of craft.

Ms. Laurence Feraud of Pegau is indisputably the Queen of Châteauneuf - this is one of the elite estates of the Rhône. They work with 11 different vineyards in the region, 18.5 hectares of which are red Châteauneuf AOC, including some very serious sites in La Crau. Plots are blended together at fermentation, aged in oak barrels for 18 months, then re-blended to create the final cuvée... an instinctive talent that mirrors Chave's magical works in Hermitage, to say nothing of the blending done in Champagne. The wines are not fined or filtered.

There's not much left to say. This is one of the biggest successes in '11 Châteauneuf at the best pricing around.
