2006 Grivot Vosne-Romanée
1er Cru Les Beaux Monts
Exceptional Pricing
"One of the All-Time Top 10 Burgundy Domaines." -Clive Coates
If the 2006s were condemned to a "quiet" release, deep in the shadows of the 2005s, the last 4+ years have seen the stature of this vintage grow considerably.
The recognition is overdue: The best bottles from 2006 soar with bright aromatics and nervous fruit anchored by vivid minerality. They are also much more approachable wines, especially compared to the tannic 05s where many Bourgogne Rouges aren't even ready.
Yet the greats of 2006 remain values, ridiculous values really, especially compared to the 2005s and the 2009s and now the 2010s.
Today a parcel of the 2006 Grivot Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Beaux Monts makes this point with some potency. While pricing for the 2005 Beaux Monts rests between $120 and $170 and the 2009 hovers between $145 and $199, today we can offer the 2006 at much less.
There are numerous ways to frame the discount here - choose your favorite one... any way will show the discount to be severe.
Yet the entire story here is not the price, not the discount. In fact, Beaux Monts is one of the more famous 1er Crus in Vosne-Romanée, a site that many Burgundy lovers have a serious soft spot for. Beaux Monts flaunts a combination of suave richness with finesse, spice and perfume that make this wine the epitome of Vosne-Romanée.
Grivot exploits these traits to make a perfumed treasure chest of juicy red fruit, bright spices and cool minerals melding into almost perfectly-integrated tannins - the 2006 especially showcases the finesse, the focus and precision of this site. The Burghound's full review below and it's a very good one and worth reading.
With ties that date back to French Revolution, the Grivot family has been making wines for five generations. They share marital ties with the likes of Jayer and Piuze and as a result have been bequeathed vineyards in top villages like Chambolle-Musigny and of course Vosne-Romanée.
Ètienne Grivot is currently at the helm and has been guiding the domaine with increased assurance. Allen Meadows writes, "Etienne Grivot has been on a ‘can’t-miss-roll' since 1998 and his performances are little short of sensational."
With a brief decant, Grivot's 06 Les Beaux Monts is a perfect dinner companion. It will also benefit from three or five years of cellaring for elegant meals in the future.
It bears repeating that the value here is significant. The reality is that the trend for Burgundy is a swiftly upward one. Today's values will likely look like steals a couple years from now.

Burghound: "A high-toned, fresh, pure and elegant mélange of red and blue fruit plus and violet notes that introduces medium weight flavors oozing with extract on the fresh, vibrant, focused and minerally finish that possesses real drive, excellent precision and a touch of youthful austerity. This harmonious effort is one to strongly consider. Recommended."
