Our Pick: NYE Budget Bubbles
Domaine Chandon Étoile Brut NV
"Spare the Expense" Sparkling Value
Chandon's Étoile Brut is unequivocally my pick for a New Year's Eve budget sparkler.
I'm such a believer in the wine that I'm offering special pricing for the next 48 hours.
Sometimes you want something that's a bit more playful and less expensive than Champagne that still delivers enormous quality. On New Year's Eve, these things can feel essential.
At Crush, we're Champagne fanatics. Along with building a serious Champagne selection, it's led us to be constantly searching for non-Champagne sparklers that over-deliver for the price point.
For ease of drinking, understanding and sheer pleasure, this is my budget pick to ring in the New Year.
I tasted Étoile at the urging of Dom Pérignon’s chef de cave, Richard Geoffroy. (Étoile is a project that he consults on.) I have to say that I was wowed at first sip and only grew more so as the wine continued to open up.
Moët & Chandon takes Étoile very seriously, sparing no expense. They have increased the lees ageing and post-disgorgement ageing, an expensive and cash-flow-restricting practice that's almost unheard of at this level.
For me, this bottle is a no-brainer. Beyond New Year's Eve, this is a bottle to have around, well-chilled for casual drinking, for an aperitif and yes, for meals. This is a wine to always have on hand.
