"Outstanding definition"
2018 Gonon Saint-Joseph

Posted by Ian McFadden

On paper, Saint-Joseph may come in behind Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, and Cornas in terms of prestigious northern Rhône appellations.

However, that would never occur to you when tasting Gonon's Saint-Joseph.

The amount of gracefulness that Gonon is able to coax from the hills of Saint-Joseph is extraordinary.

There's no mystery as to why these are some of the most sought after wines of the northern Rhône.

Gonon’s signatures are a pure and clear profile with an intricate and detailed presentation of blackberries, olives, violets, spice, and forest floor notes wrapped around a smoke-infused minerality. This is northern Rhône authentically rendered with the utmost care.

I'm really excited about Gonon's 2018. It's a layered and powerful vintage, for sure. With that said, it's the wine's radiance and precision that really stands out. It's easy to see this bottle aging beautifully.

Gonon is producing some of the most beautiful wines of the northern Rhône. I buy the wines at every opportunity. I'm expecting the 2018 Saint-Joseph to age beautifully.

Josh Raynolds, Vinous Media: "Deep violet. Intensely perfumed, mineral-accented aromas of red and blue fruit preserves, licorice, exotic spices and potpourri, along with an exotic suggestion of incense. Stains the palate with concentrated black raspberry, cassis, bitter cherry and fruitcake flavors that are given spicy lift by a suggestion of white pepper. A violet pastille nuance emerges with aeration and carries through an extremely long, youthfully tannic finish that shows outstanding definition and mineral thrust."
