The 2017s have wines of dazzling force and verve. It's rare to find a cast of wines working on this breadth and scale that's this poised, detailed, and lifted.
The 1er Cru Charmes represents a high point of the collection. Along with Genevrières and Perrières, Charmes is one of Meursault's great sites. Lafon's Charmes is the benchmark.
Lafon is lucky enough to have very well-situated vines in Charmes. They are just below villages greatest 1er Cru, Les Perrières. What makes Lafon's Charmes stand out among its peers is its grandeur and rigor. Charmes is a site that can get a little plump, but Lafon's is always sculpted and tension-filled.
The 2017 Charmes is a thrilling example of this. Burghound's note highlighting the wine's "explosively powerful, bone dry and chiseled finale" gives you a very good sense of the wine. The 2017 is powerful, silken, and has a steely minerality.
Over the past six months, I've had some absolutely dynamite bottles of Lafon. The 2017 Charmes shows the brilliance of Lafon in a really profound way.
