Overdelivering in a Big Way
-Rare Aged Bourgogne Rouge
2006 Chevillon Bourgogne Rouge
Only Bottles in the U.S.
If a category exists for elite Bourgogne Rouge, Chevillon would certainly be on the short list, right there with Mugneret-Gibourg and Bachelet.
To put it as concisely as possible, Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge overdelivers in a big way.
It's extremely difficult to find - the wine is sourced from a mere .8ha of vines. The wine isn't even brought into NY any longer. When I asked why, I was told that quantities were so small and demand was so high that it was just a big headache. At the end of the day, making enemies over a few bottles of Bourgogne Rouge just didn't seem worth it.
Which is understandable, but Chevillon is one of our favorite producers in general and we love his Bourgogne Rouge, so we definitely missed the wine in recent vintages. In terms of soul and character and overall value, Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge is very hard to beat.
This is why scoring a small, perfectly stored parcel of Chevillon's 06 Bourgogne Rouge is one of the most exciting things that's happened here in weeks. Bourgogne Rouge is, for sure, a humble category, but that makes it all the more impressive when one hits the level that Chevillon's does.
Needless to say, these are the only bottles available in the country.
One of the things that we love about Chevillon is that he is bulletproof - regardless of vintage, he doesn't seem to miss.
Even with that said, though, few producers succeeded in the 2006 vintage the way Chevillon did. Many felt that his 06s were the wines of the vintage. From Bourgogne Rouge all the way up to his top wine, the line-up is just killer.
This is clear in Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge. It offers an almost surprising level of palate presence and an impressively broad spectrum of red fruits, earth and minerals.
Chevillon's Bourgogne Rouge is one of few Bourgogne Rouges that not only drinks well on its fruit, but is lovely as it ages and develops secondary characteristics. The 06 is in a very good place right now, but could easily be held for a couple more years.
Quantities here are very modest. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
