Simply put, Château de Bonnezeaux Du Fief Prevost VV is special.
This is one of the most complex, dynamic, and layered Chenin Blancs we’ve had in a long time.
Château de Bonnezeaux had not produced a single bottle of wine in over 30 years, but in 2012, these once abandoned vineyards began their slow road to recovery, led by winemaker Guyonne Saclier de la Bâtie. Today, they are one of the most exciting young estates in the Loire.
Bâtie apprenticed under the legendary Mark Angeli at Ferme de Sansonniere. Angeli pioneered the use of biodynamic farming in the region, and was one of the first winemakers to eschew traditional wine laws and produce high quality dry wine where only sweet winemaking was permitted. Following in Angeli’s footsteps, Bâtie implemented biodynamic farming at Château de Bonnezeaux, and began producing dry wines of extraordinary quality.
The 2017 Du Fief Prevost VV, the first vintage of this bottling, was produced entirely from a single vineyard of 70-year-old vines in Bonnezeaux. Bâtie’s style leans towards power and richness, but it’s coupled with an electric minerality and textural grip that brings this wine to another level. There’s also noticeable salinity with notes of ginger, honey, lemon, and white flowers. Even though this wine is wonderfully complex now, we fully expect it will continue to develop over the next 5-7 years.
The 2017 vintage was affected by frost, but near perfect harvest conditions give the ‘17s beautiful clarity of flavor. While there’s good acidity to the wines, the vintage is driven more by rounded, full-bodied fruit, which is taken full advantage of by Bâtie’s winemaking style.
The single old vineyard that produced this wine is miniscule: only four 400-liter barrels were made. We’re lucky to have secured enough wine for this offering, but we don’t expect it will last. Give us your ideal order, and we’ll try our best.
