What does a group of Danish sommeliers, Ulli Stein, and a bottle of Overnoy all have in common?
They were all present when the idea of Stein's "Ohne" bottling was born.
The short version (of this long story) is that a bottle of Overnoy, brought to Stein's estate many years ago by this group of Danes, inspired Stein to try and make his own version of these zero-sulfur bottles.
In the nearly 20 years since Stein has been making these singular Rieslings, they have become something of a curious collector's bottling, an insider's cult wine.
Today, for the first time in five years, we are able to present a small tranche of Stein's Riesling Sekt "Ohne" Brut Nature at the ridiculous price of $39.95 in three-packs.
This is sparkling Riesling at its most delicious and cerebral; the 2015 edition comes to us with well over five years of bottle age, yet the wine shows a driving freshness, a profound mineral complexity with a resinous and firm acidity - this is unquestionably Mosel.
At the same time, Stein's 2015 "Ohne" Sekt also shows serious weight and richness with a rich, savory, saline mid-palate, buoyed and brightened by citrus and a beautiful, green-herbal freshness.
Rest assured, this truly is turn-back-the-clock pricing. Stein's current-vintage Kabinetts are approaching and pushing the $40-mark. Expect future vintages of this sparkling wine to be 40%-50% more expensive. While the wine is a profound value, it is not in great supply. We suggest that you get your orders in early.Â
