Painfully Rare Bourbon
Old Rip Van Winkle 10 Year Bourbon
Over the past few weeks, we've been flooded with orders for Van Winkle whiskies.
Out of the entire Van Winkle line-up, including Pappy, there's always a huge amount of interest around the 10 year.
I've been slowly building stock on it over the past few months and this seems like a good time to offer some.
The Bourbons coming out of the Old Rip Van Winkle Distillery are easily the most sought after whiskies. The style is unmistakable: There's power, smooth richness and intricately layered complexity.
Compared to the older bottlings, I've always admired the 10 Year for a certain directness and honesty that mingles with its lavishly spiced, sweetly floral profile. Think of a complicated mix of toffee, vanilla and baking spices.
There's plenty of length and smoothness which is nicely complemented by just the right amount of edginess. On the nose, there's such a spectrum that you return to it again and again without ever getting to the bottom of it.
I guess there's no better illustration of just how compelling the 10 Year is than its rarity and the way people hunt it down. At times it can feel like a full time job to track down parcels of this. I'm happy to be able to offer it, but be warned: quantities are extremely limited.
