Perennial Over-Achiever:
2018 Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge Magnums

Posted by Ian McFadden

Many times, I've witnessed Mouches go toe-to-toe with Grand Crus.

It probably doesn't come as a surprise that Mouches is a wine that I have a profound affection for.

Clos des Mouches was one of the first sites that Joseph Drouhin bought in the 1920s and it remains one of the gems of the domaine’s heavy-hitting stable.

Simply put: Clos des Mouches is a very special site. If Beaune is known for being somewhat sturdy and rustic, Clos des Mouches is something of an anomaly; the wine is strikingly elegant, suave, and silky in texture.

The 2018 shows Mouches in prime form. The warm vintage endowed the wines with a velvet-y power. Clos des Mouches has an incredible track record in riper vintages like 1985, 1990, 2009, and 2015. The 2018 has serious concentration, but with refined tannins and a staggering amount of freshness and elegance for such a ripe vintage.

The wine has a reputation for making serious old bones.  Burghound has notes from recently tasting a great 1964. The combination of tension and sheer concentration gives me confidence that the 2018 will age beautifully.

Burghound: "This too is quite deeply pitched with its ripe aromas of cassis, plum liqueur, spice, floral and soft oak scents. There is very good verve to the utterly delicious and slightly finer medium weight flavors that coat the palate with dry extract on the balanced and harmonious finish. This isn't quite as complex as the Grèves though that may well change with time as the track record of this wine developing well is firmly established.."
