"Simply put, it is fabulous juice!"
2008 Sette Ponti Oreno
Elegant & Refined Super-Tuscan
"These superb releases from Sette Ponti include a fabulous version of the Oreno, perhaps the finest vintage ever made." -Antonio Galloni
Simply put, Sette Ponti nailed it with their 08 Oreno.
And by nailed it, we don't mean a blockbuster powerhouse. Instead, this is likely the most precise and refined version in the wine's history. It is also the most compelling.
When an offer came into my inbox at very sharp pricing, I jumped on it.
For fans of Super-Tuscans, Bordeaux and Cali Cabs, this is worth a very close look - as much for its remarkable, refined success as for its value.
The 2008 Oreno possesses the most Bordeaux-esque profile that we've seen from this wine - the structure is more in line with Sassicaia, Solaia and Tignanello. There's more elegance and refinement, greater minerality and freshness than I've ever encountered in Oreno.
Galloni's note captures this spot-on when he writes: "The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn’t the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most elegant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice!"
2008 in Tuscany had its tricky moments, but a select few estates produced wines that will be legends. The tension, the interplay between finesse and richness is just that impressive in these wines.
Along with sensitive winemaking and rigorous selection, what made Oreno stand out in the 2008 vintage was an insightful shift in the blend. Rather than being dominated by Sangiovese, as it usually is, the wine is based primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with just a touch of Sangiovese. In the words of Antonio Galloni, it was "a decision that has paid off handsomely."

Antonio Galloni: "The 2008 Oreno is stunningly beautiful. An open, expressive bouquet laced with mint, red berries, roses and spices emerges with superb clarity and balance. The tension between the minerality of the vintage and the rich expression of fruit that is one of the house’s hallmarks play off each other beautifully here. The finish is utterly exquisite in its beguiling beauty. The 2008 isn’t the most powerful Oreno ever made, but it is quite possibly the most elegant, impeccably refined wine I have ever tasted here. Simply put, it is fabulous juice! In 2008 the percentage of Sangiovese is way down and Oreno is predominantly Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, a decision that has paid off handsomely."
