Piedmont Elite:
2016 Roagna Barbaresco Albesani

Posted by Ian McFadden

In 2014, Roagna debuted the Barbaresco Albesani. I was so impressed that I named it my wine of the year.

As you probably can guess, the 2016 has all the markings of one of the vintages highpoints.

The Albesani cru is the source of Giacosa’s famed Santo Stefano. The parcel that Roagna rents is near Giacosa’s, and it is situated in the sweet spot of the cru. Albesani has a high limestone content and it makes itself felt in a wine of incredible breeding, precision, and beautiful aromatics.

Luca Roagna has the unique ability to render Barbarescos of mind-blowing purity and incredible textural allure. This helps explain why the Roagna estate is the benchmark Barbaresco producer. And certainly, Albesani, along with Pajè, is a jewel in the crown.

Roagna's 2016 shows the estate in top form. This is an important vintage across Piedmont. The wines have a rare combination of concentration with precision and elegance. Even in this noteworthy vintage, Roagna wines set themselves apart with their intricate architecture, radiance, and pinpoint detail. Without a doubt, this is world-class winemaking on display.

The 2016 Albesani makes the success of Roagna's 2016s very clear.  Beneath a formidable structure, there's a finessed, energetic, and tensile mineral core. You seldom encounter this level of purity and sheer elegance.

Sadly, before closing, I should mention that it is very difficult to find Albesani in quantity. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.
