Roagna is one of Piedmont's great.
Luca Roagna is producing wines with mind-blowing purity and textural allure.
Their 2019s are a chance to witness Roagna in top form. This is simply an extraordinary collection of wines. Antontio Galloni has written that: "In the 2019 Barolos and Barbarescos, readers will find a set of super-classic wines."
Today, I'm happy to offer two of the highlights of the 2019s, bottles of the Rocche di Castiglione, and magnums of Barbaresco Albesani.
Both the Barolo Rocche and Barbaresco Albesani are relatively new additions to the Roagna lineup. In no time, they became two of the top wines. I named the 2014 Albesani, its debut vintage, my wine of the year.
Barolo Rocche is one of Barolo's top sites and Roagna's work with the site is world-class. This is a stunning vintage of the wines. Galloni calls it "wonderfully nuanced [and] sublime". That helps capture the complexity and incredible purity of fruit that this wine has on offer.
The Albesani Cru is the source of Giacosa’s famed Santo Stefano. The parcel that Roagna rents is near Giacosa’s and is situated in the sweet spot of the cru. Albesani has a high limestone content, and it makes itself felt in a wine of incredible breeding, precision, and beautiful aromatics. The 2019 is beautifully perfumed and delineated.
There's not much more that needs to be said. This is a brilliant duo of wines from Roagna.
