Each year, Castello di Verduno's Pelaverga is one of our most popular offerings.
The explanation is easy: it delivers an incredible amount of interest and sheer drinkability for an affordable price. This is a somewhat crude comparison, but Pelaverga is Piedmont's answer to Cru Beaujolais.
The Pelaverga grape is a specialty of the Verduno area in the Barolo zone. While Verduno's Monvigliero vineyard has enjoyed sudden fame among Barolo collectors, Pelaverga has become a go-to for casual everyday drinking. It's extremely food-friendly, offers plenty of interest, and is simply delicious.Â
Given how enjoyable Pelaverga is and its current fame, the fact that in the 60s there were only a few vines interplanted with other varietals throughout Verduno seems extraordinary. To a large extent, Castello di Verduno is responsible for Pelaverga's comeback.
In the early 1970s, Castello di Verduno planted the Basadone section of the Massara vineyard. Today, along with Burlotto, Castello di Verduno stands as the top example of the grape.
The 2019 Pelaverga has an extra layer of fruit compared to the 2018 and 2016. It also has the typical vibrancy and spicy, floral notes. There's also a savory undercurrent that adds fascination. Â
As always, Castello di Verduno's 2019 Pelaverga makes for supremely enjoyable drinking. Word has definitely gotten out. We expect people to buy deep. It's probably best to get your orders in early.Â
