Piedmont Rarity, Part II:
2017 Canonica Barolo Grinzane Cavour

Posted by Ian McFadden

On Friday, we offered Canonica's 2017 Paiagallo. Today, we ratchet up the rarity factor with the 2017 Grinzane Cavour.

Canonica has become one of the cult wine producers of Piedmont.

There's something utterly captivating about the wines. The wines possess an intangible quality that fascinates. The texture, depth, and precision are mind-blowing.

The first vintage of Grinzane Cavour was in 2012. The wine is sourced from over 50-year-old vines. A large portion comes from the relatively rare Nebbiolo Rose clone. The Rose clone tends to produce less tannic wines and there's a more accessible and silkier quality to Grinzane Cavour than Paiagallo.

Like the 2017 Paiagallo, the 2017 Grinzane Cavour is stunning. It has bright aromatics and plenty of the signature earthy, iron-inflected minerality. The wine's gracefulness is what stands out the most.

This is the first time that we've been able to offer Grinzane Cavour. Sadly, this is a very modestly sized parcel. I encourage you to place your orders early.
