Profound Grace:
2014 Bertheau Bonnes Mares

Posted by Ian McFadden

Bertheau's 2014 Bonnes Mares is special.

In any vintage, Bertheau's Bonnes Mares is something that I aggressively chase down. With only 0.34ha, it takes a lot of work and yields far too few bottles.

The simple way to sum up Bonnes Mares is that it combines finesse with power. What Bertheau does with this Grand Cru is stunning - Bonnes Mares' power is on display, but it's rendered with a startling amount of subtlety, refinement, and energy.

Bertheau's 2014 Bonnes Mares is a particularly harmonious, classy and long vintage for the wine. For all of its restraint, there are explosive aromatics of dark red fruits, floral notes, and orange peel. Burghound's note captures the wine very well: "there is excellent intensity and underlying tension to the well-defined and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors."

Bertheau's wines are things of utter beauty. They are intricate, whispering, and profoundly graceful. Few producers do purity and transparency as well as Bertheau. The 2014 Bonnes Mares shows Bertheau at the height of his powers.

Burghound: "A spicy, earthy and fresh nose is more deeply pitched while offering up notes of red and dark currant, violet and plum. Once again there is excellent intensity and underlying tension to the well-defined and tautly muscular middle weight plus flavors that exhibit a hint of bitter cherry on the sappy, dusty, balanced and ever-so-mildly austere finale. This is going to need at least 6 to 8 years first and should easily reward 10 to 12."
