Puligny Benchmark: 2017 Carillon Puligny-Montrachet

Posted by Ian McFadden

Jacques Carillon produces some of our favorite expressions of white Burgundy.

We have a particular soft spot for Carillon's Puligny Villages.

Regardless of the vintage, the Puligny serves as a perfect summary of Carillon's style and seriously overachieves for the category.

Carillon is one of the most consistent white Burgundy producers that I know. When they nail a vintage, as they did in 2017, watch out. The 2017s have stunning finesse, energy, and precision. We agree with Burghound when he writes: "I found the quality of the Carillon 2017s to be generally excellent."

The 2017 Puligny is a really beautiful vintage for the wine. It's vibrant, finely etched, and supremely elegant. It's very rare that a villages wine has this much class and sophistication.

Carillon's Puligny has a rigor that makes it absolutely beautiful after 5-10 years of age. This is a wine that we devote a lot of energy to finding. It's one of the villages Burgundies that I personally stock up on every vintage, and I plan to go deep in 2017.

Burghound: "A pure, elegant and airy nose combines notes of lemongrass, acacia, green apple and soft spice wisps. The beautifully well-detailed, intense and vibrant medium-bodied flavors possess very good mid-palate density before concluding in a saline, stony and impressively persistent finish. This is an excellent Puligny villages."
