Punching Above Its Weight Class:
2017 Ballot Millot Meursault Les Criots

Posted by Ian McFadden

If 2014 represented a breakthrough vintage for Ballot Millot, 2017 cements just how important this domaine is destined to become in Burgundy.

For us, the outrageous quality of Ballot Millot's 2017 shines brightest at the lower end. Their Perrières and other Meursault 1er Crus are great, but at the villages level, the quality is shocking.

We were especially taken by the 2017 Meursault Les Criots, which we're happy to offer at $64.95 per bottle.

The 2017 Criots boasts incredible balance and length with an interwoven minerality that's thrilling. This is one of the greatest white Burgundy deals in the store.

Ballot Millot’s roots in Burgundy are seriously deep: they began amassing vineyards back in the 17th century. The domaine has been one to watch ever since Charles Ballot took over in 2001. When Ballot took over, he began reducing yields, improving farming practices, and updating equipment. The level of quality rose dramatically.

Stylistically, Ballot Millot falls between the reductive style of Coche and Roulot and the voluptuous, oily style of old-school Meursault producers. Ballot’s wines have undeniable energy and detail, without sacrificing richness.

The 2017 Les Criots possesses an amazing sense of weightlessness. As I mentioned earlier, they really nailed the harmony in 2017 - there's plenty of richness, but it is set off by a saline mineral tension. All of this is delivered with great purity.

For white Burgundy, 2017 is truly a special vintage. You don't have to look further than Ballot Millot's Meursault Les Criots for an explanation: You have balance, purity, and a white Burg that punches well above its weight class.

Burghound: "There is a whiff of exotic fruit to the citrus, pineapple and soft floral-suffused nose. The rich and generously proportioned medium weight flavors exude evident minerality that continues onto the sneaky long and moderately firm finish. Good stuff for its level and worth considering."
