Purist's Vintage from Chinon Master - 2010 Baudry Chinon Grezeaux

Posted by Joe Salamone

For purists, for the mineral obsessed, Baudry's Grezeaux is the bottle they reach for out of his entire impressive line-up.

And the 2010 vintage emphatically showcases why.

We loved Baudry's 09s, but what makes their 2010s stand out is their clarity, precision and finely tuned balance. These are the sorts of wines that make us really happy.

Today, we focus on Baudry's 2010 Chinon Grezeaux with bottles at $25.95 and down to $23.95 on 4-packs.

Bernard and Matthieu Baudry

Baudry's Grezeaux, along with their Croix Boissée, is the Baudry that I have the most of in my cellar. Their Croix Boissée is beautifully elegant and stylish, but the Grezeaux excels when it comes to honesty, a rugged archetypical Chinon dark minerality.

Baudry is one of my favorite producers. There's an amazing consistency to the wines, not to mention how detailed, terroir-specific and unusually refined they are.

For the greatest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, the list is short: Clos Rougeard and Baudry (Jérome Lenoir deserves mention as well.) As the price tag for Baudry's Grezeaux is around a third of what Rougeard's entry level, Clos, goes for, the value here is awesome.

In her seminal A Wine and Food Guide to the Loire, Jacqueline Friedrich writes, "Chinon has no more conscientious winemaker than Baudry." This may be even truer today than it was back in 1996 when Friedrich wrote it.

To return to the 2010 Grezeaux, it is sourced from Baudry's oldest vines on gravel soils. 2010 is a great vintage for this wine. Their fastidiousness in the vineyard and cellar really paid off. The 2010 edition of Grezeaux is strikingly harmonious with a gorgeous backbone of acidity.

Everything points to it aging really well, and at $23.95 this is one of the great bargains for the cellar. You can easily hold it for a decade plus.

Baudry is a Chinon benchmark. It's really rare for a producer of Baudry's stature in a historic region priced within reach. Highly recommended.
