Purity and Finesse: Chambolle Value
2013 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny
I have a soft spot for Chambolle from Bertheau.
Chambolle, all silk and knee-weakening grace, is one of my favorite red Burgundies. And the offerings from Francois Bertheau are consistently among the best. To call them "textbook" examples of the region would do an injustice to how exciting they are. These are veritable dissertations on Bertheau's perfumed elegance and finesse.
In 2013, that is proven twice over. I'm happy to offer Bertheau's 2013 Chambolle-Musigny for $59.95 per bottle.
This vintage in Burgundy is becoming somewhat of a personal mission. The vintage was a tricky one, to be sure. When I arrived in the region in January, I wasn't sure what to expect. When I started tasting, it was obvious that there were some really, really good wines, especially in the Côte de Nuits. The best are heartbreaking in their soil-inflected freshness and classical proportions.
The style of 2013 played right into Bertheau's hands. The entire lineup has clarity and liveliness, with the texture of a very high thread count. Drinking them early, one gets the sense that there's something exciting going on. Something that will repay in the cellar.
Burghound notes that it's "very Chambolle" in its elegance and silky texture. Bertheau always delivers true to type wines of purity. They often seem to speak softly but with captivating precision. In the 2013 Chambolle, all of this is articulated with a beauty that you don't often see at this price point.
Bertheau is one of the gems of classical, understated Burgundy. Nearly every time I taste one of Bertheau's wines, I marvel at the gracefulness. The 2013 Chambolle is a textbook example. Don't miss this.

Burghound: "An elegant, airy and distinctly cool array of various red berry fruit scents is nuanced by hints of spice and tea. There is good energy and a lovely sense of detail to the lightly mineral-inflected middle weight flavors that terminate in a lacy and balanced finish. This is very Chambolle in style."
