Under-The-Radar Star
2008 Roagna Barbaresco Montefico VV
"Quality has never been higher here, and as I have written before, Luca Roagna is one of Piedmont's most promising young producers." -Antonio Galloni
We've been working with Roagna's wines since we opened in 2005, and we too have watched quality here steadily increase. For us, 2008 marks the vintage where they broke through to an entirely new level.
There's no place where this is more obvious than in the old vine bottlings.
Roagna turns out no-nonsense, old-school styled Barolos and Barbarescos. Here long-macerations, late harvests, low yields and late releases are the norm. This combined with top holdings produces deeply complex and slow to unfold Nebbiolos.
The 2008s flaunt all the aromatic nuance that Roagna captures from the grape. We love 2008 in Piedmont. 2008 is a vintage of, above all else, classical proportions and purity. There's an amazing precision and terroir expression. Very few vintages deliver such completeness, such harmony.
The Montefico VV delivers the vintage's length, clarity and detail in exemplary fashion. Galloni nails it when he writes: "Here the flavors are bright, finely sculpted and totally alive in the glass." There's such superb depth, class and fascination to the wine. We've tasted it many times and each time we were in awe at just how good it is.
Roagna only has 0.24ha in Montefico and out of this small holding they select vines that are over fifty years old. Only 125 cases were produced.
The success of the Montefico VV demands notice. This is one of the most under-the-radar stars of the 2008 vintage. I strongly suggest that you check this out.
