Radically Overachieving - Baby "Grand Cru"
2014 Keller Riesling Von der Fels Trocken
"The same quality level of a lot of top estates' Grosses Gewächs."-John Gilman
There may be no other Riesling around that delivers as much sophistication and sheer quality for the price as Keller's Von der Fels. It's rare for a bottle around $30 to work at such a high level.
That's the reason why year after year people buy Von der Fels in case quantities. Von der Fels' ability to age beautifully in the midterm makes the wine even more attractive.
The 2014 Von der Fels is intense. It boasts plenty of grip, beautiful balance and edgy minerality. As Gilman notes, in terms of class and complexity it's not far from Keller's epic and sought after Grand Crus.
Keller's 2014s stand as some of the best examples of the vintage. The wines possess a beautiful elegance and tension. If one of Keller's signatures is outrageous purity, the '14s stand as exemplars.
The estate was spared much of the difficult weather that challenged other areas. This allowed Keller a leisurely harvest and a careful selection. The result was a Von der Fels of truly impressive depth, length and clarity of expression.
Klaus-Peter Keller is easily one of the most fascinating and talented winemakers we know. To get a sense of this, Levi Dalton's I'll Drink to That interview with Keller is very much worth listening to. There are many ways to highlight Keller's skill, but perhaps the best is what he achieves with a wine at the price point of Von der Fels.
