Radically Transcending A Humble Category:
2013 Bachelet & Chevillon Bourgogne Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

As far as the Burgundy hierarchy goes, Bourgogne Rouge doesn't amount to much. Still, there's a very select few Bourgogne Rouge that get chased down by serious collectors.

Today, I'm excited to present two of the best, Chevillon and Bachelet. These are bottles that we buy and cellar every year and drink after being in the cellar for 7-10 years.

In short, these are wines that radically overachieve and overdeliver. They are also some of the greatest deals in Red Burgundy.

In 2013, the best wines from the Côte de Nuits display brilliant purity, vibrancy and seductively fine textures. Among top producers like Bachelet and Chevillon, the wines possess beautiful balance and classical proportions. These are very exciting young Burgundies.

Chevillon is one of the most reliable, bulletproof producers in all of Burgundy. Sourced from a mere .8ha of vines, his Bourgogne Rouge offers a gorgeous spectrum of red fruit, earth, and minerals, delivered with plenty of punch and clarity. While the fruit is bright and bold in its youth, the wine develops really lovely secondary characteristics with a few years of age.

We love Bachelet’s Bourgogne Rouge for its incredible energy, depth and detail. Bachelet's wines are some of the most authentic and mesmerizing Burgundies out there, and the 2013 Bourgogne Rouge really underscores this. Bright, clear fruits are interlaced with layers of spice and soil, complemented by vibrant acidity and a long, lingering finish. There’s a sense of harmony to the wine that’s really compelling.

These are wines that radically transcend the unassuming category. They've gained a cult following for this reason. Quantities are extremely limited.
