The new vintage of Wasenhaus has arrived. We emailed about the estate bottlings last week.

Today we focus on their rare Grand Crus - three Spätburgunder Grand Crus and two truly epic whites, the Chardonnay Hohlen and the Weissburgunder Bellen.
These are among the rarest and most coveted wines of Wasenhaus.
Part of their magic is that they speak to a very broad audience. These are essential wines for serious German wine dorks, yet they have also found a very cherished place in the cellars of top Burgundy collectors.

As we've written before, what makes Wasenhaus so singular is that while the wines are very "Burgundian," they are also something else, something unique. They are slimmer and more delineated. While they are not finer than the great Burgundies, they are perhaps more condensed and lighter. They have an incredibly high thread count, a textural elegance that is astounding.
What is unquestionably different from Burgundy is that Wasenhaus is still outlining their various terroirs. They are still learning about the voices of their vineyards - and so are we. As with Burgundy, this is a great deal of the thrill.
The Chardonnay Hohlen is linear and taut. Already it is one of Germany's greatest Chardonnays, with a limestone core that pulses with energy.
The Weissburgunder Bellen is both ultra-fine and severe, incisive. This is a nervous Weissburgunder with a profound mineral core, yet also soaring herbal elements, botanicals, and flowers.
The Spätburgunders continue these themes. The Hohlen is an archetype of a limestone Pinot Noir - linear, dancing, buoyant, and elegant. The Bellen is similar, but cooler-toned, finer, perhaps more delineated, and more structured.
Finally, the Möhlin is the most complete: It is darker, denser, deeper, meatier, with a cooling minerality and fine washes of fruit that give the wine incredible length.
All of these wines, reds and white, will benefit from being decanted or getting some rest in the cellar. Quantities are very limited.
