Everything that is Great and Noble
1992, 1997, 1999, 2005 Egon Müller
Riesling Scharzhofberger Auslesen
Singular Collection of Müller Legends
The estate of Egon Müller is the DRC of Germany.
There is simply no greater, more storied estate in Germany; there are no greater Rieslings - incredible depth and complexity and intensity on a framework that is never anything other than gossamer, a thread of silk made porcelain.
With Egon Müller, the DRC comparison is appropriate in one other way: pricing. These days, Egon Müller Auslesen come out of the gate at $300 or more.
These are serious tariffs, no doubt. But place these wines in the context of the greatest wines in the world and they actually clock in on the low side.
In any event, with today's tiny parcel we've been able to shave the pricing even further. This is pricing for Müller's Auslesen the likes of which I've never seen before.
And every single bottle here is an epic, epic, EPIC, EPIC Müller - if we had some 2001 Auslesen it'd be the complete dream team from the last few decades.
The 1992 is an AUCTION Auslese - an incredibly rare bird that at 20 years old is still young and primal, with glossy lime zest and honeyed stone fruits, so deep and narrow.Had a bottle of this many years ago at Ssam bar with pork buns - still can't forget the bottle. This will last another 20, easily. We have just a few bottles and these are the only ones in the U.S.
The 1997s are wonderful, dense and compact with so much energy. Those who have had Müller's 97s know the story here. Only six bottles available - these will disappear near-immediately and if they don't I will buy them all.
The 1999s are the surprise stars on the list - this is one of our favorite Müller vintages of the past decade. It is a superb vintage at Müller, the fullness of the vintage giving the wines juicy, ripe mid-palates that have uncommon depth and complexity yet they do not push too far. Müller's 99s are as taut and mineral-driven as you'd dream. The pricing here is less than current release!
Finally, the legendary 2005s. I don't know if this is widely known or not, but Herr Müller calls this the greatest vintage he's ever made (his father's greatest vintage was 1971). There is just no denying that these are among the greatest expressions of Saar Auslese and they will live for many, many decades - especially in magnum.
Finally, the magnum opus today, the 2005 Müller GKA - only a few solo bottles available. Only the Müller BA or TBA (starting at, eh, $500 a half-bottle for the BA, don't even ask about the TBA) will offer more than this wine. Comparatively, a steal.
