Rare Sighting - Mature White Burgundy:
1982 Potel Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Combettes

Posted by Ian McFadden

Combettes is one of my favorite of Puligny's 1er Crus. And when you combine that with the '82 White Burgundy vintage, I snapped up this parcel quickly.

What I love about Combettes is how it combines a tightly wound stony core with a rich, floral accented presence. It also struts the intangible breed that top 1er Cru White Burgundy possesses.

The hallmark of the 1982 White Burgundy vintage was the wines' sense of completeness. They are wines of grandeur, finesse and verve.

Potel's '82 Combettes shows the vintage with the complexity that only full maturity can bring. It possesses a bold acidity and a very stylish and elegant presentation. There's a clear mineral backbone to the high-toned and penetrating richness.

It's worth noting that Potel purchased the cellar that this '82 comes from fairly recently from Robert Ampeau and that this bottle has been aged at the domaine's cellar for most of its life. Ampeau is famous for his rigorously structured, long-aging White Burgundies.

Parcels of old White Burgundy like this don't pop up very often. And when they do, they're never plentiful. Our advice is not to hesitate.
