Rare Value in Traditional Barolo
2006 Cascina Fontana Barolo
Only bottles in the U.S.!
Cascina Fontana is a tiny 4ha estate. If it wasn't for the size, you'd be very familiar with the wines.
Once you taste them, these are wines that leave a deep impression.
As it stands now, the wines have a very low profile. They're not reviewed by critics. The people who know them throughout Europe buy up the majority of the meager stock.
In some ways, this is good news. Cascina Fontana offers some of the best value in Barolo that we know of.
When I tasted Cascina Fontana's Barolos from both '08 and '06 almost a year ago, I was blown away by the evident thoughtful winemaking, the truly impressive level of quality. We offered out the 2008 in the fall, to rave reviews. Today, we focus on the more powerful and deeply structured 2006.
Before going on, I should mention from the outset that this is a small parcel. And just to highlight the rarity, these are the only bottles in the country and there is just one other listing in the world.
The 2006 vintage for Barolo is lovely in its classic combination of balance, subtlety and tannic grip. We will likely look back on these wines as some of the greatest of the decade. Antonio Galloni says "the finest bottles are truly exceptional." Cascina Fontana's '06 definitely qualifies for this category.
Cascina Fontana's 2006 Barolo combines the concentration, structure and power of the vintage with a really elegant expression of the fine-ness that Nebbiolo is capable of. For people looking to build a cellar without breaking the bank, this is a must buy. It has a long and promising life ahead of it.
Cascina Fontana is led by Mario Fontana, the sixth generation to make wine here. Mostly old-school methods are used along with uncompromising standards. Following the traditional practice, Fontana blends three different vineyards for its Barolo looking for completeness and complexity. The results are really compelling.
Don't let the price fool you: This is a Barolo that can play with the big boys. It's rare to have such a quality, cellarable Barolo at pricing like this. Of course, the only catch is that there's just not a lot of this.
