Rare Volnay - A Study in Purity
2011 d'Angerville Volnay
1er Cru Les Caillerets

For the past couple of months, I've been doubling down on 2011 d'Angerville. The 2011s are just that good, especially Caillerets.

Simply put, to miss out on d'Angerville's 2011s would be a mistake. This is a vintage that people will be talking about for years to come.

D'Angerville's holdings from Caillerets are just 0.65ha. Being able to offer Caillerets is a tough thing to pull off. I try every vintage and occasionally can make it happen. For me, Caillerets is one of the greatest expressions of Volnay. When it's on, it has no problem going head-to-head with the Grand Crus of the Côte de Nuits.

The 1er Cru Caillerets is likely the most supremely elegant and mineral Volnay. It does not lack in intensity or length, but delivers these with a subtlety and a gorgeous slow-to-unfold complexity. If Caillerets doesn't get the props that it deserves, it's because there's so little to go around. Finding Lafarge's Caillerets is pretty much as difficult as finding d'Angerville's.

The 2011 Caillerets captures the site's startling greatness with particular acuity. Antonio Galloni's note nails this quality: "Here the style is lifted, aromatic and understated, with veins of crystalline minerality that give the wine its sense of energy and focus." Reading this note, it really makes clear just how transparent this vintage is for Volnay and how incredibly successful d'Angerville was.

D'Angerville's 2011 Caillerets represents this great site at its purest. I'm very happy to offer this and I fear that I won't be able to do so again anytime soon.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Freshly cut flowers, mint and sweet red berries are some of the many notes that come alive in d'Angerville's 2011 Volnay Caillerets. Here the style is lifted, aromatic and understated, with veins of crystalline minerality that give the wine its sense of energy and focus. Overall, this is one of the more delicate and finessed wines in the range, but at the same time, the wine is much less expressive than it was from barrel."
