Rarity From California's Golden Age
1968 BV Georges de Latour Private Reserve
I'm very happy to offer a legend from California's glory days and from a great vintage.
The golden age of Beaulieu Vineyards stretched from 1938-1972. During that time, it played an essential role in defining the style of elite California wine - classically structured and beautifully refined.
The best have aged beautifully. The first time that you taste an old BV, Mayacamas, Inglenook, Souverain Cellars or Heitz Martha's (to name a few) it's amazing. Even at 40 or even 50 years of age, the wines are very much alive and profoundly complex.
We’ve become obsessed with old California bottlings like this ’68. No matter how sensitive and thoughtful the winemaking in California is today, these bottles feel like pieces of history that can’t be reproduced. There’s a grace and nuance that’s heartbreaking.
Andre Tchelistchef was the guiding light behind BVs glory days. The Russian-born winemaker came to BV in 1938 and almost immediately left a profound and lasting mark on California wine. There’s little debating that he’s one of the most influential California winemakers of all time. At his urging, they released the first vintage of their top bottling, Georges de Latour Private Reserve.
The 1968 George de Latour combines the regal structure and complexity of classic, top Bordeaux with an extra layer of dark fruit and power. At this point in its development, there's a beautifully harmonious weave of cedar, spice, crushed leaves and cassis fruit.
For me, this is one of our most exciting offers. We usually see three or four bottles of old California bottlings like this. It's incredibly rare that we are able to offer wines like this to a fairly wide group of people.
