2008 Raveneau Chablis
The Second Vintage of this New Raveneau Bottling
"Flavors that are rich, dense and serious while culminating in a racy, detailed, austere and persistent finish. Terrific quality at this level." - Allen Meadows
If you're getting this email, chances are the name "Raveneau" means something to you.
Jean-Marie and Bernard Raveneau make what are perhaps the most monumental Chablis on the planet. These are dense, muscular, and super-saturated wines with a simply ruthless delivery of mineral and tremendous precision and length.
They are singular wines and they are among our very, very favorites.
Today we offer out a new Raveneau bottling, a value wine that delivers the texture, the depth, the power of a Raveneau Chablis, at a steep discount.
With the 2008 Raveneau Clos skyrocketing to somewhere between $300 and $400 a bottle, it's easy to get a blindsided by the idea of a $60 Raveneau, but the focus should not be only on the price.
This is, after all, a Raveneau, and as such it is one of the most authentic expressions of Chablis you are likely to come across.
This village-level Chablis is sourced from a vineyard near the 1er Cru Montmains. This is serious terroir - Montmains is one of a trio of great 1er Crus that face the Grand Cru sites themselves.
The wine itself is classic,a thrill for purists, yet there is already a generosity here. Honestly, the wine is delicious. The palate is very compact, dense with extract, textured citrus with that smoky, gunflint finish. Indeed, this is a village-level wine that will put to shame many 1er Crus from lesser producers, have no doubt.
It's also worth noting that while you may very well be better off leaving your bottle of Clos for your grandchildren, this village-level Chablis will develop much quicker. This is a Raveneau for the mid-term - the Burghound estimates its prime drinking window will begin in just a few years.
While we'll do our best to get this parcel in for the summer, there is no rush; given the fierce structures of the 2008s, it's probably best to be as patient as you can. Wait till next summer and then begin the revelry. This will not disappoint.
We have but one small parcel and that's that. To order, please reply to this email or call the store at (212) 980-9463.
