Raw Power, Regal Elegance:
2006 Il Poggione Brunello di Montalcino

Posted by CrushWine

Every time we offer Il Poggione, the response is huge. Without a doubt, the wines represent some of the best value we know of for traditional Brunello.

Normally, we wouldn’t entertain offering Brunello in the middle of August. But when this well-priced parcel of Il Poggione came my way, I knew I had to jump on it.

Il Poggione is known for producing wines that seamlessly marry raw power and regal elegance. It’s a pleasure to be able to offer their Brunello from an exceptional vintage, at such a sharp price.

By now, the success of the 2006 vintage in Montalcino is well known. It’s one of the top vintages for Brunello of the past decade. The wines boast impressive muscle and architecture, elevated by great precision and an ultra-clear expression of terroir.

The 2006 Brunello beautifully captures all of the intensity and finely detailed perfume that makes Il Poggione so endlessly captivating. Antonio Galloni writes, “layered, rich and explosive, the 2006 conquered all of the senses with its marvelous depth and pure power.”

Il Poggione's 2006 Brunello flaunts a kaleidoscopic spectrum of aromatics, along with a complex palate of vivid red fruit, minerals, flowers, dried herbs and spices. There’s rigorous structure, complemented by refined tannins and outstanding length. It's a gorgeous edition of the wine.

Il Poggione has been making spectacular traditional Brunello for well over fifty years, but over the past decade the wines have reached an elite level. They’ve broken into the ranks of Brunello's best, and yet, they remain fairly priced.

Galloni puts it best when he writes that Il Poggione is "among the very best values in cellar worthy wine anywhere in the world." In a great vintage like 2006, it’s one of the smartest buys we know of. Today’s sharp pricing only sweetens the deal. We strongly encourage you to stock up, while you can.
