"For anyone interested in terroir-expressive, viticulturally conscientious champagnes, these have become wines that are well worth pursuing." -Peter Liem
Fabrice Pouillon has proven himself to be one of the most exciting producers in Champagne today.
Since Fabrice Pouillon arrived in 1998, the quality at Pouillon has skyrocketed.
We loved his 2007s, but the 2008s are shockingly good. We've been watching Fabrice's wines grow increasingly refined, detailed and expressive. In 2008 this reached a level that we hadn't witnessed before, especially with Blanchiens and Valnons.
Of course, this isn't entirely surprising - 2008 is one of the great vintages of the past decade, and a personal favorite of ours. The wines have a riveting energy, length and clarity. Pouillon’s 2008s are beautifully balanced, full of tension and class.
To start with, "Les Blanchiens" is a blend of equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the 1er Cru Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. It's bottled without dosage and still retains an impressive sense of balance and harmony. "Les Blanchiens" offers compelling complexity and depth, without sacrificing grace or detail.
"Les Valnons" is a rare Blanc de Blanc from the Grand Cru Aÿ, an area normally associated with Pinot Noir. Those of you familiar with Gaston Chiquet's Blanc de Blancs d'Aÿ know just how magical Chardonnay from Aÿ can be. Valnon has plenty of aristocratic presence, but equally important is its vibrant notes of citrus, stone fruits and chalk.
The Pouillon family has been growing grapes in the region for over a century, and making wine since 1947. But it wasn’t until Fabrice Pouillon took over the reigns that serious Champagne drinkers began taking notice.
He’s propelled the estate in an exciting new direction - converting their 6 ha of vineyards to organic, employing biodynamic principles, keeping yields low and embracing single-vineyard Champagnes. His thoughtful and precise approach to winemaking has been met with stunning results: the wines are wonderfully aromatic, vivid and incredibly finessed.
We’re excited to be able to offer two of his top wines from such an epic vintage. Don't miss.
