Today, we focus on Schäfer-Fröhlich's 2011 Felseneck Spätlese, which dramatizes how much energy and focus he was able to extract from the vintage.
We've been offering Schäfer-Fröhlich's wines since the 2005 vintage. With each vintage, we find ourselves saying that the wines are even better than the previous vintage. I don't know of another producer whose ascent has been so swift and consistent.
The Felseneck Spätlese is one our favorites every year. It's hard to deny Schäfer-Fröhlich's dry wines, but his Felseneck Spätlese has always been an exemplar of Tim Fröhlich's magic touch.
Tim Fröhlich is without a doubt one of the most skillful and dedicated winemakers in Germany. His 2011 Felseneck Spätlese drives this home.
Tim said he had never harvested such beautiful grapes as he did in 2011 and you can taste it here. The wine is pristine in its expression.
He was ruthless about selection in 2011. He made repeated trips through the vineyard, discarding less-than-perfect fruit... final harvests weren't until the end of October, which was very late for the 2011 vintage.
What Tim has been able to achieve in 2011 is just thrilling. His Felseneck Spätlese represents the 2011 vintage at its most glorious.
It's a truly exciting wine - highly recommended and limited.
