Reassessing Alsace:
2021 La Rogerie Alsace Riesling Villages

Posted by Ian McFadden

For us, Riesling is one of the greatest grapes on the planet.

With that said, we don't focus on Alsatian Riesling very often. Sure, we'll offer Trimbach's Frédéric Emile or Clos Sainte Hune. After that, Alsace offers are pretty sparse at best.

To be honest, many of the Alsatian Rieslings that we've tasted didn't quite have the radiance, snap, and definition that we think of as one of the grape's major talents.

When we recently tasted La Rogerie's 2021 Villages, there was no other option than to reassess what we expected from Alsatian Riesling. La Rogerie's had plenty of cut and was light on its feet.

This shocking wine is the product of François Petit and Justine Boxler. Justine's family runs the famed Alsace domaine Albert Boxler. François Petit comes from a Champenois family. The Champagnes that he and Justine are releasing from his family's domaine are some of the most exciting wines coming out of the region.

Their 2021 Riesling Villages is gorgeous. It offers up a really fascinating agility backed by driving, textural, and almost chalky minerality. There's a pristine presentation of stone fruits and floral tones that adds a vapor-like quality. After tasting the wine, we opened up a bottle for the staff and drank it over two days. It was even better on day two - it had grown more harmonious and refined.

We're really excited to offer this wine. Beyond redefining what we expect from Alsace, this is simply a joyful bottle. This is undoubtedly a domaine to take note of.
