Red Burgundy As It Should Be, Part Two:
2021 Bertheau Chambolle-Musigny

Posted by Ian McFadden

In March, we offered Bertheau's 2021 Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru. It sold out in a flash.

It's nice to see the excitement over Bertheau's wines. They are some of the Burgundies that I'm most fond of. Few producers do purity and transparency better than Bertheau.

Bertheau's wines are honest in the most commendable, purest way - there's no flash to them, and that's part of what makes them so captivating. They are wines that feel as though they're without artifice. The wines are animated by a fine-ness, a delicacy. They speak softly but with magical precision.

Bertheau's Chambolle AC beautifully underscores these qualities. When you factor in the value that Bertheau's Chambolle offers, it goes a long way in explaining why it sells out quickly each time we offer the wine. It's a supremely elegant wine with a hauntingly gorgeous perfume. The Chambolle always offers up beautiful transparency and heart-breaking delicacy.

Bertheau was very successful in 2021. It's a very appealing vintage at this domaine. The signatures of silkiness and a delicate and nuanced profile are present. In this vintage, though, there's a touch more juiciness and power. The total package is captivating.

François Bertheau told Burghound that 2021 was his lowest yield ever. This is a very modest parcel. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.

Burghound: "Cool, very pretty and nicely spicy red berry fruit aromas give way to delicious, round and relatively supple light to middleweight flavors that conclude in a dusty, youthfully austere and lightly stony finale. This understated effort is very Chambollesque and worth considering."
