Red Burgundy At Its Most Heartfelt
2012 Bize Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux

Simon Bize produces some of the most authentic, mindful, and too often overlooked wines we know.

When it comes to soulful and ageable Red Burgundy, there are few wines as compelling and as fairly priced as Bize's.

Bize's wines are defined by their stony cores and complexity. They display a fascinating combination of finesse and wildness.

Drinking a Bize wine is simply thrilling.

Today, I'm happy to offer a wine that I have enjoyed many times, the 2012 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux. Today's pricing is $67.95 on single bottles, down to $64.95 in 4-packs.

Savigny-les-Beaune is fascinating for its sheer number of 1er Cru microterroirs, and Les Fournaux, along with Les Vergelesses, is one of our two favorites. If the Vergelesses is more structured and refined, Les Fournaux is lusher, more concentrated, even voluptuous in its dark, palate-staining fruit.

Bize's wines, and Savigny in general, are not socks-knocking blockbusters. They don't rely on power of reputation or of girth. The wines are mineral and honest, possessing a luscious rusticity, but one that's elegant nonetheless.

The 2012 vintage gave Bize's wines a density and purity that expresses Savigny's earthy minerality in an emphatic way. The vintage saw low yields that produced concentrated wines. Along with its structure and sheer intensity, the hallmarks of the vintage are purity and vividness. Along with 2010 and 2015, 2012 is held to be the decade's best vintage so far.

It's rare that we are able to offer affordably priced red Burgundy from a top vintage with some age on it. The 2012 Fournaux is delicious and I doubt that this modest parcel will stick around for long. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.

Burghound: "There is just enough wood to notice surrounding the dark currant, earth and slightly animale aromas. There is solid mid-palate concentration to the velvety and agreeably intense and vibrant medium weight flavors that possess excellent volume on the rustic finish that displays good length as well as quite a bit of youthful asperity. My range assumes that this will gradually dissipate with bottle age."
