Red Burgundy Exactly As We Like It
2017 Simon Bize Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Talmettes

Posted by Ian McFadden

As we've said before, Simon Bize makes red Burgundy exactly as we like it.

They are not blockbusters; they do not rely on power. Instead, the wines are mineral and honest, possessing a luscious rusticity and quiet finesse.

If you’re after red Burgundies with stony cores, finesse, and just the right amount of wildness, then this is an essential address to know.

The 2017s offer a perfect summary of what makes Simon Bize such an important producer for us. Bize's 2017 collection is incredibly strong. They are beautifully composed and possess a dazzling clarity.

As is often the case, the 1er Cru Les Talmettes provides a perfect summary of Simon Bize's style in this vintage. There's a rugged honesty to Talmettes that always seems to lay bare what this domaine is about.

The 2017 Talmettes is beautifully pure.  I really like the wine's focus and driving, grippy stoniness. The overall balance between mineral fineness and wildness is finely judged.

This is a great example of how deep, soulful, and wonderfully fascinating Bize's wines can be. Any red Burgundy fan should check this out.

Burghound "A high-toned, admirably pure and airy nose speaks of cherry, raspberry and soft floral notes and in particular lavender. There is really lovely detail and a fine minerality to the tautly muscular, textured and attractively layered medium weight flavors that possess good depth and persistence on the mildly rustic and grippy finish. This too is going to need at least some patience as it's quite firm today."
