Rhône Royalty: 2011 & 2014 Chave Hermitage Rouge

Posted by Ian McFadden

Chave’s masterful Hermitage is the crown jewel of the Northern Rhône.

There’s simply no better expression of Syrah on the planet.

The Chave family has been making wine on the slopes of the Northern Rhône for over 500 years. They hold parcels in Hermitage's finest vineyard sites (Les Bessards, Meal, l’Ermite, Peleat, and Les Beaumes), and Jean-Louis blends these with an unparalleled mastery.

The 2011 Hermitage is easily one of my favorite Northern Rhônes of the vintage. It possesses a concentration and rigor that's rarely seen in the vintage. Everything is rendered with serious precision.

Chave's 2014 Hermitage takes the textural allure and brightness of the vintage and endows it with a grandeur and structure that amazes. There's a remarkable depth of complexity with beautiful snap and finesse. It's probably not surprising that this represents the vintage at its most compelling and noble.

I strongly advise you to listen to Levi Dalton's incredibly informative interview with Jean-Louis Chave. There's a wealth of information that isn't available elsewhere.

Chave's Hermitage is one of the aristocratic wines of the world. I'm not going to belabor this beyond mentioning that quantities are limited. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
