"Rich, dense and explosive"
2015 Roederer Cristal

Posted by Ian McFadden

The 2015 Cristal flaunts the maison's extroverted and suavely textured signature.

In short, this is a really fun and intriguing vintage of Cristal. I'm very happy to offer it at sharp pricing.

The 2015 offers layers upon layers of complexity. Its combination of sleek finesse and depth is really compelling.

I'm very excited to see how the 2015 ages. The transformation that Cristal undergoes as it ages is amazing. While maintaining a dynamic verve, it becomes deeply complex, boasting notes of roast coffee and toffee along with an utterly aristocratic personality.

It's easy to imagine that Cristal's status as a luxury item obscures just how great it can be, so let me say that anytime I have the opportunity to drink old Cristal, I get very excited.

It also obscures Roederer's progressive philosophy, which is often overlooked. Roederer is the largest organic and biodynamic vineyard owner in Champagne.

Every element of producing great Champagne is approached at Roederer with the utmost care and thoughtfulness. This attention to detail really shows in the 2015 and underscores that Roederer is one of the most beloved Champagne houses.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "I have tasted the 2015 Cristal three times so far - once as part of an extensive vertical I will be reporting on shortly, and then later in my office. Those tastings paint a portrait of a complex Champagne that is still finding its center. Tasted at the maison, the 2015 is rich, dense and explosive, with tremendous textural intensity and also a good bit of energy to back it up. Citrus confit, spice, ginger, chalk and dried flowers abound in a Champagne endowed with tremendous aromatic presence in a style that offers notable richness, but lighter than vintages such as 2012. There is a bit of the savoriness that is such a signature of the year, but it is nicely integrated in the wine’s fabric. Two later tastings in my office strongly suggest the 2015 has already started to shut down a bit, which is a shame, as it may be hard to read for some time to come. Dosage is 7 grams per liter. Disgorged: November 2022. The 2015 is an unusual Cristal in that it includes fruit from all 45 parcels at the domaine, which has not happened since 2002."
