Clos des Monts Luisants is a monopole of Ponsot and is based entirely on century-old Aligoté vines.
If Aligoté has a reputation for producing work-a-day wines, Ponsot's Clos des Monts Luisants is something entirely different. It's a wine of enormous class and distinction. Along with d'Auvuney, it's the most grand and multifaceted expression of the grape. It's also very rare - there's just one other listing for the 2014 in the U.S.
The Ponsot family has believed in Aligoté in Luisants for a long time. William Ponsot planted the Aligoté vines there in 1911. Without a doubt, nearly anyone else would have planted the vineyard exclusively with Chardonnay. Later, Pinot Gouges, a mutant white Pinot Noir, was planted in the vineyard and the blend was mostly Aligoté with Chardonnay and Pinot Gouges. There have been many bottles that have aged brilliantly.
In 2005, Laurent Ponsot decided that Aligoté produced the best wines and focused solely on the grape. The yields are very low and he uses an old school vertical basket press. What results is a riveting and singular expression of White Burgundy full of piercing stony complexity.
2014 is a standout vintage for Clos des Monts Luisants Blanc. Generally speaking, 2014 is a vintage of extraordinary rigor, clarity and concentration. The 2014 Clos des Monts Luisants has a radiant intensity with an incredibly nuanced, high-toned finesse.
