Roederer Cristal:
2004-2013

Posted by Ian McFadden

Today, I'm happy to celebrate Roederer's Cristal with a concise list of some favorite vintages.

Bottles of Cristal have blown me away too many times to count. That happened recently with a bottle of 2004 that we opened at the store. It was an amazing champagne.

Today, I'm happy to offer Roederer's Cristal, including rosé and large formats.

It's easy to imagine that Cristal's status as a luxury item obscures just how great it can be. It also obscures Roederer's progressive philosophy, which is often overlooked. Roederer is the largest organic and biodynamic vineyard owner in Champagne.

Every element of producing great Champagne is approached at Roederer with the utmost care and thoughtfulness. This attention to detail really shows.

The 2004 Cristal is one of the absolute highlights of the vintage. The combination of sleek elegance and layered, multifaceted complexity is magical. We recently opened a bottle at the store after some really serious wine, including Coche-Dury Corton-Charlemagne and Gonon VV, and the 2004 totally held its own.

I'm very confident that the 2008 will go down as one of the greatest vintages of Cristal in the past forty years. The 2008 is all about purity, harmony, and an energetic structure. It's a Cristal that's simply mind-blowing.

The 2013 Cristal captures much of what we love about the vintage: a vintage of finesse, subtlety, and incredible purity. To this, the 2013 Cristal adds its signature extroverted and suavely textured layers of complexity. The combination of sleek finesse and depth is compelling.

Finally, there's Cristal Rosé, which is one of the greatest examples of the category. It's a blend of low-yielding Pinot Noir made in the saignée method from the Bonotte-Pierre-Robert and Gargeotte vineyards in the Grand Cru village of Aÿ that's blended with Chardonnay from Mesnil and Avize.

The 2013 Rosé has a beautiful finesse, subtlety, and incredible purity. It possesses a beautiful silken quality along with amazing fine-ness, detail, and aromatics.

Before closing, I should mention that the transformation that Cristal undergoes as it ages is amazing. I'm very happy to be able to offer these four wines.
