Saint-Joseph Sweet Spot:
2023 Gérard Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard

Posted by Joe Salamone

Le Blanchard is one of Saint-Joseph's coolest vineyards.

Here, Saint-Joseph possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume—elements that it shares with Cote-Rotie. It all adds up to an exciting and gorgeous example of Syrah.

We first offered Gérard's Saint-Joseph in the 2014 vintage. It quickly became one of our most popular offers.

Xavier Gérard has maintained a low profile, but he's among the most talented winemakers in the northern Rhône.

Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and, in no time, has turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrah and Viognier.

The majority of Gérard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His Saint-Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. In a good vintage, he makes a mere 2,000 bottles of the Saint-Joseph.

The lighter and more nervous style of Le Blanchard dovetails very nicely with the vintage. The vintage combines the ripeness and power with a dose of the vibrant acid backbone. There's remarkable focus, soaring aromatics, and incisive length.

There's an easy explanation why offers for Gérard's Saint-Joseph always have such an enthusiastic response. It's extremely appealing, honest Northern Rhône Syrah at a fair price. Please give us your ideal order, and we'll try our best.
